What is an expert witness?

An expert witness is a person who is permitted to testify at a trial because of special knowledge or proficiency in a particular field that is relevant to the case. Expert witnesses may be called in, however, under a variety of circumstances and at different times in the pending litigation. Unlike fact witnesses, expert witnesses are paid to provide an opinion that the trier of fact can rely upon. Expert witnesses can opine on singular or multiple issues at trial.
